Exercise: Time to breathe!

Take a deep breath. Feel the air filling your lungs, expanding your chest. Feel the spaciousness that is created with a deep inhalation. Perhaps even hold your breath for a moment while you hug your lower chakras tightly into your core.

Now let the breath out again, gently releasing tensions in your body as you soften your shoulders, your chest, your arms, and hands.

Feel the natural impulse to breathe in again, and allow your lungs to fill even more deeply. As you do so, imagine that your whole body is breathing, that your skin is a membrane that is expanding and contracting, that the boundary between inner and outer is softly dissolving…

Notice the natural balance between breathing out and breathing in. There is always enough air to breathe in, always another breath to take, from your first gasp at birth to your last breath at the end of life. Like the heart that never stops beating from the womb to the tomb, the breath is the very hallmark of life.
